Memorize the Word
"I have hidden your Word
in my heart..." Psalm 119:11
Susie invited her
unsaved co-worker, Maria, to see "The Passion." Maria wiped her eyes during
the entire movie and when it was over, she and Susie sat in silence. They
were the last to exit the theater, because Maria didn't seem to want to
leave. On the drive home Susie longed to ask Maria how she felt about what
she saw, but couldn't find a way to break the silence.
The next day at the
office, Susie saw Maria at the copy machine. For a few minutes they made
small talk, but Susie could tell Maria had more to say. As Maria was sorting
the copies, she thoughtfully looked up and said, "So, Susie, what does 'He
that believes in me will live, even though he dies' mean?" Susie muttered
something about getting together for lunch and went back to her cubicle.
Sitting at her desk, Susie
rehearsed what she was going to say to Maria, but was at a loss. She had
heard someone say that we should tell people Jesus loves them and has a
wonderful plan for their lives, but she was hitting a brick wall. Susie had
memorized Bible verses when she was a little girl in Sunday School, in order
to earn a shiny silver dollar, but as an adult had lost interest. She came
to the realization, that although she could quote lines from her favorite
movies and telephone numbers and e-mail addresses, she couldn't even recite
all of John 3:16.
The conversation at
lunchtime, instead of being a wonderful opportunity to share God's plan of
salvation, consisted of Susie squirming in her seat, dodging Maria's
questions. It's not that Susie didn't know the Truth. She had become
born-again as a child, and had always endeavored to live the Christian
life. But when called upon to share the Truth, she couldn't.
Scripture memorization is
foundational to being able to tell people of the Good News of Jesus Christ.
No other single exercise pays greater dividends. Make a list of soul winning
Scriptures and then type "Bible memorization" into your search engine to
find websites that will help you with techniques to make the process easier.
I promise, if you make
Scripture memorization a consistent part of your daily routine, your
witnessing will be sharper, your confidence enhanced, and your personal
faith will be solidified.
