Love and Evangelism
“By this
all men will know that you are my disciples…” John 13:35
I think the famous Christian quote “Preach the
gospel…and if necessary use words” has done more harm than good for the
cause of evangelism. It has given Christians an excuse to keep their mouths
shut. However, I understand the punch behind the quote: Living Christ the
same time you are sharing Him will give your witness a greater impact.
Which is more important in soul winning—the
life you lead or the words you say? It’s like asking which side of a coin
is more important, heads or tails. Both are necessary and inseparable.
If you live an exemplary Christian life for 50 years,
yet never utter an evangelistic word, you will be an ineffective soul
winner. At the same time, if you are an evangelistic machine by having
countless conversations about Jesus, yet your life does not validate your
lip, you will be just as fruitless.
We either witness for the Lord or against the Lord by
our actions. At all times we are either bringing someone closer to Him or
farther away. How can we lead people to our wonderful Savior if we repel
them by our hypocrisy?
We paint a picture by the life that we lead. Make
sure the picture you are painting is one of love.
