Dying to Save
"For
whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for
Me will find it."
--Matthew 16:25
*I
don’t want to tell the stranger sitting next to me about Jesus. He could
give me the cold shoulder, or worse yet, he might start telling me about his
messed up life and I don’t want to get involved. I save my life by not
taking the risk.
*I don’t want to visit my elderly neighbor in the
hospital. I know that she needs to hear the Gospel, but I wouldn’t know
what to say. Besides, she’s having tests run and I would probably visit at
the wrong time. I save my life by refusing to think about her.
*I want to keep tracts on my desk at work, but my
co-workers might think I am weird. If I seem like a regular person I will
continue receiving lunch invitations. Besides, isn’t my life the best
witness of all? I save my life by saving face.
*I’ve just had an argument with my unsaved brother-in-law and I don’t want
to apologize. I know that if I don’t tell him that I’m sorry I will ruin my
witness, but do you know how many times he has hurt me? I save my
life by ignoring the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
*My
church is going door-to-door soul winning and I don’t want to go. It’s the
only day I get to sleep-in and I really need my rest. Besides, slamming
doors and growling dogs are not how I plan to spend my Saturday. I save my
life by saying that I have a previous commitment.
We can save our lives by protecting ourselves,
guarding our feelings and our time, maintaining control, and staying
comfortable. We will never get burned out, used up, or weighed down. And we
will have successfully avoided being laughed at, rejected, and scorned. But
the ultimate end is death.
Or,
we can lose our lives by doing all things for the sake of the Gospel, dying
to self, and giving up everything we have. And in return we gain
everything—the abundant life of JESUS.
