Door-to-Door Evangelism
Door-to-door
evangelism is a form of confrontational evangelism where you purposely go out
to witness about Jesus from home to home. This is the way believers evangelized in the early
church.
Acts 5:42—“Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to
house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that
Jesus is the Christ.”
The cults have stolen this from the church and made it their own. The church
needs to take it back and make it a regular practice.
Do’s and Don’ts of
Door-to-Door Witnessing
1. Always go in two’s or three’s.
Never go alone, but do not go with more than three people. It is too
dangerous to go alone and more than three people is a crowd. Ideally go by
two’s.
2. Pray as you approach a home.
As you walk down the street or sidewalk ask the Holy Spirit to go before
you, to soften and prepare their hearts. Prayer is the key to success in
outreach. When going two by two one can talk and the other one pray.
3. Step back from door after knocking.
Step back a few steps so those inside can see you through the glass in the
door. Stepping away from the door makes the person opening the door less
fearful. If you stand too close to the door, you will produce fear instead
of a witness for Jesus.
4. When door is answered immediately identify yourself.
Ex.: “Hello, my name is Sue Smith and I attend Faith Christian
Center.” This will immediately differentiate you from a cult member.
5. Witness with an attitude of understanding.
We should remember that those that we witness to by going door to door may
never have attended a conventional church. Others may have at one time
attended church and have been hurt and plan to never return. Some may have
never even had an opportunity to receive Jesus Christ as their Savior. Cult
members going door-to-door may have harassed some. With all this in mind,
we need to witness with an attitude of understanding as we approach
someone’s door and be prepared for whatever the reaction is.
6. Let one member of the team be the primary spokesperson.
If everyone talks to the homeowner, it may appear that you are ganging up
on them.
7. Approach door-to-door evangelism, first, as a way to make friends.
Because cults have been to combative in their converting efforts, we need
to take a far gentler approach. Some good conversation starters are:
“This is our gift to you.”
“The doors of our church are always open to you.”
“We would like to invite you to our Christmas Eve service.”
“Is there anything you need prayer for?”
8. Ignore distractions.
When you are in the home, if they smoke or if the television or radio is
on, ignore it. If the kids are making noise ignore it. Take stickers for
the children. Witness in the environment presented. You will never have a
perfect opportunity to witness and your efforts to create one will make
people angry or disturbed with you. It is, after all, their home. Remember,
if someone invites you in it means they are receptive to you and there is
more of chance they will be saved.
9. Make sure you never enter a home alone.
This is especially true if the person is of the opposite sex. Avoid all
appearances of evil.
10. If the person is not home, never leave tracts, gifts, etc. hanging on,
or inside of a mailbox.
It is a federal offense and would tarnish the good name of your church. If
you can’t hand from doorknob, place between door and screen door or don’t
leave anything at all.
11. Follow-up is essential.
If someone wants more information about the church or receive the Lord it
is essential that you get their name, address, telephone number so that the
church may follow-up. Remember, if we don’t follow-up, the devil will
swallow up.
Despite the knock-backs, door knocking is very rewarding. If you have
knocked on a few doors, you will know that you will get the usual, “We’ve
got our own religion, thank-you.” You will also get the occasional door
slam, and the faith-testing dog, but you will make valuable contacts, meet
some lonely old saints who need encouragement, place seed in hearts,
literature in homes, and reap if you faint not. Your efforts will produce
results and many will be saved if you knock on enough doors.
