You Cannot Do the Job of the
Holy Spirit
Evangelism is not a
solo by God or a solo by you. We are co-laborers. It is not that
evangelism is even a 50/50 deal. Evangelism is 100 percent both: 100 percent
God and 100 percent us. Jesus was 100 percent God and 100 percent human.
That is the way God works through His church. He fills 100 percent human
beings with His 100 percent divine Holy Spirit. That is the way God’s work
and witness in the world goes forward.
Evangelism is a team
effort between God and me. He opens the door, I walk through. He provides
the conviction, I provide the explanation. He provides the light, I provide
my life. He provides the power, I the prayer.
The job of the Holy
Spirit is to draw the sinner, and convince him of sin, righteousness and
judgment. Our job as Christians is to faithfully plant the seed of God's
Word in the sinner. It is our job to go. Just as we are to lay hands on the
sick and leave the recovering part up to God.
Evangelism is like
felling a tree. The Holy Spirit sends this one and that one along to chop
away at them so that they reach the point at which only one more chop will
fell the tree. The final guy gets credit for chopping down the tree, but
what he really did was give just the last chop necessary. And furthermore,
he’s not even the chopper. He’s only the ax! The Holy Spirit is the One
who’s doing the chopping. He’s just an instrument in the hands of the Holy
Spirit.
Even in a Billy Graham
Crusade, when thousands get saved, statistically they have heard the gospel
5 or 6 times before the crusade.
Successful witnessing
is simply sharing Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit and leaving the
results to God. We can’t save anybody. Jesus didn’t command us to go out
and save anybody. He commanded us to go out and witness to others. The
doors for soul winning that God opens, no man can shut and the doors that
God shuts, no man can open. You can’t fail at the job of soul winning. For
you to fail, God has to fail.
