How to Keep Your Passion for
Souls Burning
1. Remind yourself
that the time is short. Be last days oriented. What do basketball
players do when they are ahead by thirty points with one minute to go in the
game? They start rejoicing, celebrating, hugging, and leaping for joy. Even
though the final buzzer hadn’t gone off, they know they have already won.
That is the way we should act. Even though the trumpet hasn’t sounded yet,
we need to act like it will any second now because we have already won.
Jesus defeated sin and the devil on the cross and gave us power in His
resurrection. We need to rejoice, that although Jesus is not back yet,
there is less than a minute to go on God’s timetable. Our lives are
short—soon it will be over. I am looking forward to being with Jesus and
taking as many people with me as possible.
2. Never tire of
soul winning. To be an effective witness for Jesus Christ, you have to
be faithful. Faithfulness is the key to successful Christian living. Never
get tired of serving the Lord, because the Holy Spirit doesn’t get tired.
Life never gets dull or boring or tedious if we live by the power of the
Holy Spirit.
I don’t care what kind
of training you’ve had in the past, you can’t let yourself get lax today.
You may have been the best soul winner in town three years ago, but what you
did yesterday has nothing to do with today. Today is a brand new day, and
God is looking for you to win souls for Him today!
You may be thinking,
“I don’t feel much like witnessing to the uttermost part of the earth.” You
need to put action first and feelings second and keep your spirit in good
condition. Unless you keep your spirit in the right kind of condition—full
of strength, full of love, and full of power—you will never do anything of
value for the Lord. Just like you have made decision in your life such as,
“I go to church every Sunday,” or “I am a tither,” in the same way you have
to make a quality decision from which there is no turning back, “I am a soul
winner.”
3. Evaluate your
priorities. When you lose your vision of winning lost souls for God,
then you are no longer thinking like the Holy Spirit—you’re thinking like
yourself. You have left what God has given you to do and have started doing
your own thing.
4. If you feel
yourself slipping, ask God for help. Be truthful with Him and ask Him
to help you. Tell Him, He already knows.
5. Set soul
winning goals. Setting soul winning goals brings focus to the Great
Commission and reminds all of us individuals that there is an overwhelming
primary purpose given by Jesus for the church to unite. In other words,
there is a single cause (the salvation of mankind), which is bigger than all
our individual needs and desires. So, whether it’s with a chart, a
thermometer, or other visual aids, or simply a continual vocal expression,
set goals and contend for the faith. Simply put, setting evangelism goals
will bring your church into one accord aimed towards our Great Commission of
winning souls.
6. Meditate on the
destiny of the ungodly. Someone asked the great evangelist D.L. Moody
how he would train young evangelists. He said, “I would simply dangle them
over hell for a few minutes.”What will we do when it's time for souls to be
condemned to hell? What will it be like to stand there and watch as people
are thrown into the lake of fire forever? Will we think, Did I know any
of them? Could I have done anything that would have kept them from going
there? We either don't believe the horror that "whosoever was not found
written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation
20:15) or we don't care. Both are sin.
7. Keep your
shield high and watch. If you are going to do anything for the Kingdom
of God, be ready for unexpected abuse. This may come through a Christian
brother or sister - the place least expected. Satan has no mercy. He will
stomp on you when you are down, and dig his grimy heel into the back of your
neck. Don't listen to his lies! Satan hates you and has a rotten plan
for your life. Your downfall is his delight. When I was a new Christian I
had such zeal for winning the lost. I shared this zeal with a supposedly
mature Christian and she told me, “Zealousness without wisdom is
foolishness.” It put out my fire for a long time, because I thought that
she knew better than I. Remember, passion draws some people and repels
others.
8. Don’t let soul
winning become familiar. People lack passion because they have allowed
something precious to become familiar—like when a child asks for a Christmas
toy and within two weeks he loses his passion. The strategy of Satan is to
take that which is most precious in your life and make it that which is
common.
9. Surround
yourself with other soul winners. Link yourself up with people that
have a fire for evangelism. It will keep you stirred up. The opposite of 1
Cor. 15:33 is true.
10. Put what you
have learned into practice right away. If you determine to start
witnessing right away, Satan can’t as easily steal the seed that has been
planted in your heart.
